I know blogs are supposed to be about how amazing your child is and all of their incredible accomplishments but I wanted to take a minute to talk about the other side of parenting.
Earlier this week, we had a rough 24 hours. Here is the timeline of events:
8:30pm to 7:00am
Let me set the stage...we had just come home from 5 days in Houston, and had celebrated Christmas with both of our families. Needless to say, Riley was just a TAD bit off her schedule but she was handling it quite well. We put her to bed without a problem. At about 12:30am she commenced waking up every 30 minutes. After two hours, I woke Ben up and told him it was his turn to deal with her! She ended up waking up about every 30 minutes for the rest of the night. It was terrible! We still don't know what happened to her.
After that rough night, we were hoping for a better day. After a few strong doses of caffeine, Ben informed me that I "woke him up at the climax of his sleep cycle." Was he kidding? Absolutely not! He talks more about sleep cycles than anyone I have ever met. I asked him how I was supposed to know about his sleep cycles in the middle of the night. He said that I should turn on the hallway light and very closely examine his eyes to see if they were rapidly moving to determine if he was in REM sleep. I thought we were joking but I'm not entirely sure...
3:00pm
As a Christmas present, my parents got Riley a super cute pink polka dot chair from Pottery Barn with Riley's name monogrammed on it. I love it! Ben thought it would be so fun to have Riley try it out. He then started talking with me down the hallway and the next thing we heard was a loud thump. Riley had done a forward roll off the front of the chair! After 5 minutes of tears, she was fine. Hopefully this won't cause any long term mental damage.
8:00pm
I was getting Riley ready for her bath time which includes singing goofy songs on the changing table, getting her undressed, and walking (quickly) to the bathroom for her bath (no accidents on me yet)! She was feeling hot so I decided to take her temperature. She was suprisingly (and forebodingly) quiet while I was taking her temperature. As soon as I took the thermometer out, I heard a splat on the wall. That was how I realized that projectile poop was occuring! She had managed to clear the end of her changing pad and table, another three foot span, to hit the wall about five feet away! If this was an Olympic event, I'm sure she would have medaled. Ben thought it was so incredible he ran to get the video camera to capture this oh so special moment. I began cleaning Riley and the wall. (This is typical - I respond by cleaning, Ben's first response it to video). As I was putting Riley's clothes on (bath time was apparently forgotten at this point), it was only then that I realized that she had peed all over herself and the changing table. And so bath time was immediately remembered!
We definitely had an unforgettable 24 hours and are still laughing about all of our goof-ups. Hope someone else out there can identify with me. And if you are not a parent and think that YOU will never have these moments, think again! Everyone does (or at least I hope it's not just us?!?).
Weary?

Oh girl...you are in good company here! Let's see, Daniel fell off of our bed numerous times before I realized I should stop leaving him up there even just for a second unsupervised. Caroline rolled off the bath sponge that was placed on the kitchen counter as I was preparing her for a bath in the sink. Yep, butt naked on the kitchen floor. I'm sure something has happened to Abigail, but can't remember. Lilly had conditioner put all over her face and in her eyes by one of her siblings. David was in Haiti at the time. After thinking she was going blind and calling poison control several times, all was well, but it was so scary! Josh's elbow was dislocated just hours after joining our family. And I'm sure this is just the beginning! You guys are doing GREAT!...although I'm not so sure about Ben's sleep cycle comment! Seriously Ben! Should Riley be doing the same before she wakes Lauren in the middle of the night! :) Love you guys!
