4 month appointment!

Let me preface this post with the fact that every doctor's appointment before this one went extremely well! So I was fully expecting glowing reports about how great Riley (and me) are doing! So imagine my surprise when I put Riley on the scale and she weighed 10 pounds 7 ounces. I asked the nurse if the scale was broken! My heart sank because she was not gaining enough weight. At her 2 month appointment, she weighed 9 pounds 3 ounces, so I fully expected her to gain about 3 pounds at her 4 month appointment. Hence me asking if the scale was broken!

Here are Riley's 4 month stats:
Weight: 10 pounds 7 ounces (5th percentile)
Length: 24 inches (40th percentile)
Head: 16 cm (40th percentile)

After much discussion with my doc, she thinks I need to add more calories to my diet so that will add more calories to the breast milk. Nuts, avocados, and dried apricots are great for this. So I am off to the grocery store to stock up on those. As a side note: when I called Ben (tears may have been flowing then) and told him about the appointment and eating more nuts. His exact reply was "great, I get to start eating lots of nuts"! Can the guy be any more optimistic and encouraging? He is a keeper! Back to the story, my doc also gave me formula to supplement my breast milk. She said to give Riley food until she indicates she is full. So last night, I did a full nursing session and then gave Riley 6 ounces of formula/breast milk. She downed it all (I was normally giving her 3 oz in a bottle), so I made her another 2 ounces and when she was almost done with that, she started sticking out her tongue to let me know she was done! I had never given her the chance to let me know she was full!

So here is to fattening me up and also Riley! I have one month to try this before I have to take her back and weigh her. If she hasn't gained at least a pound, then the doctor will have to start testing Riley to make sure everything is okay with her. I thought I would take pictures of skinny Riley right now so that we can all laugh about how chubby she WILL be getting in a month (or less)!

She currently only has 1 roll of fat on her thighs! Look how skinny her waist and arms are!
Just a pensive look at the camera. I love those beautiful blue eyes!

  1. She's beautiful Lauren! You are doing a GREAT job with her! Keep feeding her till she's full and I bet you see some rolls in no time. And if not...Abigail is still in the 5%, and all is well. Keep your trust in Him!

  3. Wow. That is surprising but I think that happens to some babies. The fact that you now can adjust and get that baby fattened up is all that matters.
